Dating back thousands of years ago, ancient philosophies, religions and now even the latest science suggests to truly experience a spiritual awakening, your soul or spirit must experience the death and rebirth cycle. For that’s how a new life is born.
To experience a spiritual, soul, psychological, emotional (or whatever you want to call it) death, that simply means letting go of all attachments to the body and world.
Maybe it makes sense, maybe it doesn’t. Whatever the case, it’s something you can’t truly understand unless you’ve truly experienced it.
The “scary” reality is many are unconsciously holding onto so much trauma and attachments that it hinders spiritual growth.
While trauma undoubtedly has a significant psychological impact, as we discuss in our Profound Impacts of Trauma From a Psychological Perspective blog, it’s crucial to recognize that its effects extend beyond the realm of the mind, cognitive processes and psychology.
In this blog, we’ll explore the neural mechanisms behind this phenomenon and shed light on how letting go of trauma and attachments is essential to fully unlock your spiritual potential.
Neuroscience has shown that traumatic experiences and attachments leave imprints on our brain circuitry, particularly in regions involved in emotional processing and memory formation.
The amygdala, a structure responsible for fear and emotional responses, can become hyperactive and oversensitive following trauma. This heightened reactivity can perpetuate a state of hypervigilance and emotional distress, making it challenging to experience a sense of inner peace or connect with a higher spiritual reality.
Furthermore, attachments formed through trauma can create neural pathways that reinforce patterns of suffering and emotional dependency. The brain’s reward system, centered around the release of dopamine, can become activated when engaging in familiar but harmful patterns associated with trauma or unhealthy relationships.
Consequently, this reinforces the attachment to suffering, making it difficult to detach and embark on a transformative spiritual journey.
The Default Mode Network, a network of brain regions associated with self-referential thinking and mind-wandering, plays a crucial role in both trauma and spiritual awakening.
In individuals with unresolved trauma or strong attachments, the DMN tends to be overactive, leading to rumination, intrusive thoughts, and a preoccupation with past experiences or future expectations.
This hyperactivity of the DMN can obstruct the path to spiritual awakening. It creates a mental barrier that prevents individuals from fully experiencing the present moment and connecting with a deeper sense of self.
Spiritual awakening often requires a shift away from ego-driven thoughts and identification with past traumas or attachments. By breaking free from the grip of the DMN, individuals can cultivate a state of mindfulness, openness, and receptivity to the spiritual dimensions of existence.
Ever seen the movie Frozen? I hope so because there’s a particular scene I’d like to break down to simplify everything I’m saying.
One of the most powerful scenes in the movie is when Elsa breaks free from her shadows, fears and attachment to the castle, and embarks towards the North Mountain.
Along the journey, she takes off her gloves, pretty much says “f*ck it” and starts using her magic that’s been concealed for years.
Basically, after years upon years of holding onto so much guilt, shame, fear, anxiety and trauma, Elsa was finally able to recognize it, let go of it all and ultimately step into her true power and potential.
Guess what she sang in this scene? “Let it go, let it go!”
We can apply this same principle a Disney cartoon demonstrates to real life! Here’s how…
The reality is we all have trauma and attachments to the world. Both on a collective and individual level. Although that’s out of our control now, there’s certainly things we can do now to transform into a better reality.
To embark on a transformative spiritual journey, it’s crucial to engage in practices that facilitate the release of trauma and attachments.
Neuroscience suggests that neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself, can support this process of letting go and pave the way for spiritual growth.
Mindfulness meditation has been extensively studied and proven to have positive effects on the brain. It can reduce the hyperactivity of the amygdala, calm the DMN, and promote neural integration and coherence.
Through mindfulness practices, you can cultivate present-moment awareness, observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, and gradually detach from the grip of past traumas or unhealthy attachments.
In addition to mindfulness, other modalities such as somatic experiencing, breathwork, and energy healing can help release stored trauma from the body and promote emotional well-being. These approaches work in synergy with the brain’s neuroplasticity, facilitating the rewiring of neural connections associated with trauma and attachments.
By letting go of trauma and attachments, you create space for spiritual growth and awakening. The freedom from the burdens of the past allows for a deeper connection with the present moment, a heightened sense of interconnectedness, and the exploration of higher states of consciousness.
From a neuroscientific perspective, holding onto trauma and attachments can hinder our spiritual awakening. The neural circuitry shaped by trauma and attachments perpetuates emotional distress, prevents inner peace, and reinforces patterns of suffering.
However, through practices that promote neuroplasticity and the release of trauma, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards spiritual awakening. By letting go of the past, you open yourself to the richness of the present moment and the profound possibilities of spiritual exploration and growth.
